What RRAS does:
If you perform inspections, assessments, inventories, monitoring or other work in and around streams and rivers, this technology was built for you. RRAS™ is a waterproof, shatter-proof, data secure, multi-purpose tool built specifically to assist those working in the field of water resources. The RRAS system is more than a handheld computer, GPS receiver or a digital camera; RRAS is the complete stream tool.

One of the product’s most unique features is the observation function. This function automatically georeferences your “observations” by tying together GPS time and position information with digital photographs and/or field notes. Observations are seamlessly correlated with other information collected in the field. Our new GPS “go-to” capability makes navigation a snap for return site visits.

Other time-saving functions of the RRAS™ Stream handheld are in-field calculations and data verification performed by the RRAS Stream software. Once your field data collection is complete, transfer your data quickly and easily from the handheld to your laptop or PC into the companion software application called RRAS™ Base.  RRAS Base performs data compilation, analysis, formatting, and reporting, while allowing you to edit key report elements. Simply select “print” and RRAS Base software delivers your data in a comprehensive report format including graphs, charts, tables, and photos.

In summary, RRAS technology saves you time, effort and money by dramatically decreasing the demands commonly associated with data collection, data entry, data compilation and report generation. RRAS enables you to spend more time on tasks such as data analysis, data comparison, and recommendations.

How RRAS GPS compares to others on the market
:The RiverWorks development team tested multiple GPS receivers and selected the most appropriate technology to meet the demands of the industry.  The receiver is optimized based on a combination of accuracy, functionality, price, battery usage, wireless capability and compatibility with both hardware and software.

The RRAS Stream GPS receiver is a Bluetooth wireless device for use with the RRAS Stream unit.  It is a small, water resistant, device with a rechargeable Li-ion battery providing more than 9 hours of continuous use.  Along with support for the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), it also provides enhanced algorithms - SnapLock and SnapStart which provide superior navigation performance in dense foliage and canyon environments.

How the RRAS digital camera compares to others on the market:
Like the RRAS GPS receiver, the RRAS digital camera integrated into RRAS Stream was selected for optimized performance based on several criteria including functionality, price, memory storage demands, battery usage, and compatibility with both hardware and software. The RRAS digital camera currently has the following specifications:

  • Built-in nonvolatile storage that allows you to store approximately 2,000 good quality 4”x6” color images that have GPS coordinates and date/time stamp as well as text notes embedded in each image.
  • 640 x 480 pixels
  • 24-bit color (“True Color”)

How to collect your own custom data: RRAS has a supplemental data feature which allows you to extend the RRAS assessment protocol with data unique to your application. Create a Supplemental Data page for collecting your data.  You can create as many fields as you wish using your own terminology, build your own dropdown lists for ease of data entry, and record as many observations as you wish.  Your supplemental data become part of the assessment.

Expanding your RRAS:

The 9-pin serial port on the RRAS Stream allows you to attach external devices such as sensors and loggers to increase your work options and reduce the number of pieces of equipment needed by field personnel.
